The Ten Worst Hospital Design Features: A Family Member’s Perspective – Better Health

While I think we all have our own pet peeves, a good list:

  1. False alarms
  2. Intercom systems
  3. The same questions ad nauseum (repeat!)
  4. Inopportune intrusions
  5. Poorly designed tubing
  6. Upside down call bell
  7. Excessive hospital bands
  8. Blank white board
  9. Slightly-too-tight pulse oximeter
  10. Ticking and creaking IV drip

Not all of these were an issue at my hospital. Others have written about hospitals as prisons (Mark Dery, Suleika Jaouad). Hospitals are not nice places to be, no matter how caring the staff.

The side benefit is the incentive to get out as soon as possible!
