Five-point checklist to protect eyes from sun’s harmful rays

Some good pointers, particularly for people at higher risk (e.g., retinal disorders, light-coloured eyes, cataract patients, and those taking medication to increase eye sensitivity):

  1. Check the UV protection level of your sunglasses (ideally UV400 – need to check mine)
  2. Check the lens tint – should block between 80 and 90 percent of light. Neutral tray, amber, brown or green.
  3. Wrap around sunglasses and/or a hat with a wide brim and high SPF (e.g., Tilley)
  4. Wear shades over contact lenses
  5. Buy shades for your children
