Consumers caught in middle of sunscreen debate – USATODAY.com

An update on the delay in new labelling regulations for sunscreen and some good advice:

  1. Choose SPF 15 or higher (30 is actually recommended)
  2. Choose ‘broad spectrum or UVA and UVB
  3. Ignore hype (e.g., terms like ‘sunblock’, ‘waterproof’, ‘sweat proof’, any SPF over 50)
  4. Do not rely on sunscreen alone (minimize time between 10 am and 2 pm, and cover up with hats, sunglasses and clothing)

Overall message:  “Don’t work on your tan. Work on protecting your skin from the sun and preventing skin cancer.”
