Listen up, doctors: Here’s how to talk to your patients – Salon.com

A good, somewhat chatty and funny, advice to doctors on how to engage and respect patients. Key points:

  1. Take your hand off the goddam doorknob already
  2. Remember that this random collection of faulty parts is a person
  3. Consider that the patient is telling you something the charts don’t
  4. Accept that we didn’t go to medical school
  5. Talk frankly about how we’ll pay for this – and don’t assume anything (for US residents mainly)
This of course needs to be matched with advice to patients on how to engage and respect doctors (see How to win friends and influence doctors)
