John J. Castellani: Fighting Cancer: Don’t Let Our Progress Slow

Not without merit, tho argument in favour of long-term commitment for cancer research made by the President of PhRMA (pharmaceutical industry association), noting the progress being made in targeted therapies and drugs, as well as the costly and lengthy new drug development process.

What the post is silent on, is relative investment in preventative versus curative measures. Most health care spending in all countries is overwhelming in favour of the latter – treating the disease, not preventing it. I expect there would be much greater healthcare savings in preventative care than in targeted therapies.
