While the focus is on possible multi-drug treatment approaches, it is the discussion of evolution and resistance that is the most interesting, and one that highlights the complexity of treating cancers.
The multi-drug approach is, in fact, not that different in concept to the chemo ‘cocktails’ that we are familiar with that use a variety of chemo drugs to kill as many cancer cells as possible and reduce the resistance issue. Quote:
Put simply, [Martin] Nowak said, the findings suggest that, of the billions of cancer cells that exist in a patient, only a tiny percentage — about one in a million — are resistant to drugs used in targeted therapy. When treatment starts, the nonresistant cells are wiped out. The few resistant cells, however, quickly repopulate the cancer, causing the treatment to fail.
