Mindfulness Practices to Improve Health and Happiness | World of Psychology

Some mindfulness suggestions to help give one a greater sense of control:

  1. Become response-able, leading to being more responsible
  2. Choose your behaviour
  3. Choose your language
  4. Recognize automatic behaviours
  5. Announce every activity

While some of this can be taken to extremes (e.g., announcing “I’m choosing to walk across the room”), pausing and thinking about one’s choices or intent can be helpful in developing new patterns.

This can be uncomfortable for some; during a management training exercise, trying to get us beyond our comfort levels, one thoughtful person suggested that each person preface their remarks by stating their intention. All hell, pardon the language, broke loose, with the implied suggestion, not inaccurate, that either people were acting automatically without really thinking, or they were ‘gaming’ their interventions to assert their personal authority. Hence the value of mindfulness ….
