Researchers Link Stigma to Depression Among Lung Cancer Patients

Not surprisingly, but good to have this confirmed, is that lung cancer patients may suffer more from depression given that the main cause of lung cancer, tobacco use, is largely preventable by not smoking.

The conclusion, however, to reduce any stigma by patients viewing themselves as victims of tobacco industry marketing, “being wronged rather than as  ‘wrong-doers'”‘, goes too far in the other direction, as individual responsibility also plays a role in continuing to smoke or not. My previous post (here) played on this theme, and better to encouragement empowerment than victimhood, while of course recognizing the influence of other actors.
